Fact From Our Forests :( The Ash boar has killed Most All of the Ash in
our Southeastern Michigan forest’s.
This wood long known to full time wood burners as one of the best heating
woods will soon be gone . Ash has a very low resistance to decay . We need to
use( honor) as much of this resource as possible . A Few of the ash that I have
harvested are close to being ( down graded ) to a lower heating grade . Many
Ash trees are BE COMING HAZARD TREES and are going to be the root
cause of ( Power Outages )and outer damages . We must harvest Our Ash ASAP
. Praying for a rebound someday, We know this will take lots of time .
Ash will be missed as one of top Grade of heating woods - as early as in 2 years :(
A cord of wood is 4’x 4’x 8’ which equals 128 cubic feet. In the beginning of measurements 4’ logs (called bolts) which were burned in King Arthur’s sized fireplaces At the turn of the industrial revolution. A genius invented the steam engine. Ships at sea and paddle wheels of the Mississippi River used bolts (4’ logs)in their steam boilers. Cords of wood were purchased to fuel the ships and paddle wheelers. At the same time in history another genius invented a locomotive. They couldn’t move 4’ logs between the fuel tender and the engine. So, a 24” long log was used. The railroad purchased wood by 4’ x 8’x 24”- a face cord. At the same time in history another genius invented a pot belly stove. The logs for the stove could not be longer than 10” and no bigger in diameter than 4”. Pioneers and settlers purchased 4’x 8’ x 10” – a face cord. So, the vagueness size of a face cord was born. Either 4’ x 8’ x 24” (half a cord) or 4’ x 8’ x 10” (slightly more than a fifth of a cord). How vague of measurement is that ! ! !. Through the years fireplaces and the size of wood stoves have varied. If you cut a log at 16” long you will have a single stack of wood 4’ x 24’ x16” which is a cord (128 cubic feet). We do not sell by the face cord. We sell by approximant cubic footage which is stacked into our truck so you see the size of it before you pay for it
